Up to this point my paintings were about pushing paint around with tools that scraped it into the canvas rather than let it sit on top. In this one I treated the early pass as an underpainting, something to build on rather than resolve. Beneath the surface are layers of drawing and thin paint from that search, mostly buried now, surfacing only in fragments. I worked several more layers on top, aiming to stay spontaneous, and somewhere in that process I began to see a vase of flowers, dropped to the ground.
