These paintings work in the space between spontaneity and control. Each one begins with a narrative — a face, a gesture, an idea — built up in paint and then worked over, scraped back, reasserted. The tension is never fully resolved. It's the subject.
I returned to painting this year after a long career in design, and now work several days a week in both a home studio and the Painting Lab at PCC. Paint offers an immediacy that design never did — the ability to respond in the moment rather than deliberate. This is the first body of work to come out of that return.
